Meeting the Needs of Gifted Students in the Regular Classroom

Describes the video/booklet package that I wrote and which was the initial source for several of the pages on this site, particularly concerning school provisions for gifted children

SOME OF THE material on these pages was adapted from text I wrote for the booklet of a video booklet package called Meeting the needs of gifted students in the regular classroom, a 1994 project of the NSW Association for Gifted and Talented Children. This project had the support of the three major schooling systems in NSW and benefited from their editorial advice. It was funded by the Commonwealth of Australia through its Department of Employment, Education & Training under the Gifted & Talented Component of the National Equity Program for Schools.

Copyright in the video/booklet package is held by the Commonwealth of Australia (1994), but the Commonwealth of Australia has agreed to allow this text to be made freely available to educational and non-commercial bodies. The video (PAL format, 29min) and booklet package are available from the NSW Association for Gifted and Talented Children.

Aim of video/booklet package

The aim of this video and booklet is to encourage teachers to explore and discuss several of the many strategies that can be used to meet the differing needs of their students, enabling each to develop his or her own talents in an open, cooperative atmosphere. In doing so teachers will increase the effective engagement of gifted and talented students in the learning process. Teaching gifted and talented students is a challenge that confronts all teachers in all classrooms. These students can come from all backgrounds, including from low socio-economic, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, non-English speaking, physically-handicapped and learning-disabled populations. The presence of these often disadvantaged backgrounds should not preclude their particular needs being met.
